SOME OF THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS ABOUT THIS WATCH [ SAMPLE ]

1) Very useful extension to a smart phone - This watch (I own the fully black version) works very well with my Nexus 5.

In general, I feel that a smart watch is an almost unavoidable accessory to a smart phone, especially for those who want to stay connected with minimal effort. I think the biggest challenge is getting the UI right, but this first version of Android Wear is a remarkably good effort. (Unfortunately the UI is too complex to discuss here.)

Physically it would be nice if this watch were a little smaller and thinner. The bezel could be smaller. The rectangular form factor is fine---this is not (just) a watch, it shows text, and that works better on a rectangular display IMO.

PROS:

- My phone is now completely silent. (It can be configured otherwise, but that would miss the point IMO.) Phone calls and various notifications result in unobtrusive vibrations on the wrist (repeated vibrations for a phone call, a single vibration for a notification).
- I no longer have to pull the phone out of my pocket to see if I need to take the call, or act on the notification.
- Battery life is very good. Typically I have 80% charge at the end of the day. (I leave the display turned off.)
- Placing the phone on the charging cradle is almost effortless, certainly a lot easier than plugging a USB charger in
- Simple replies to text messages can be dictated quickly and effectively.
- Can be used for maps navigation
- The step counter is on by default and it's interesting to know how much one moves around.

CONS:

- Lots of different settings and options---unclear how to use optimally (but the defaults are quite good)
- Long delay (1s?) when turning the watch towards one's eyes to check the time (annoying but acceptable---I haven't tried leaving it on)
- I wasted a lot of time trying out different watch faces
- Hard to read in strong sunlight (but the phone is hard too, and it's easy to shade the watch with the other hand).

2) Solid smartwatch - I'm not sure about all of the hate I've read for the G Watch (or its Samsung counterpart of Android Wear in general). I've had the watch for several weeks now and have enjoyed it.

As a confession, I did get the watch half off with the purchase of the G3, so I'm not sure if my review would change paying full price for this or not.

I doubt it, though. The G Watch and Android Wear as a whole is a basic notification system with a few extras mixed in. It provides your updates, whether texts, Facebook messages, calendar announcements on your watch which keeps you from taking out your phone every time it buzzes. You can also send and reply to text messages, as well as control your music playing on your phone.

For me, that's what I wanted out of this. Between those features and GPS, the G Watch meets my demands. As a former Google Glass user, this is a cheaper alternative that provides me with many of the same features including voice controls.

And I have yet to see the battery issues that other users have. I have my screen set to 2 and it only works when I tilt my watch to me. With this setting, I get a solid 30 hours of battery life. I typically run it from 7 am to 10 pm, turn it off, and then back on the next day. When I go to charge it on the second night, I typically am still at 20 percent or so. And this is with somewhat moderate usage.

So why four stars instead of five? Two things. The G3 has a fantastic text messaging system. However, the G3 text system does not work properly with the G Watch. Again, an LG product's text software does not work with its own watch. This forces me to use Hangouts, which I am not a fan of. Doesn't make a lot of sense in my mind, so I hope it's something that will be fixed.

Secondly, there just aren't a lot of apps for Android Wear just yet. And those available are rather limited. It's first generation, so I get it, but I do look forward to more features being made available.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.
